IAFP 2024 Highlights a Global Food Safety Vision for our Present and the Future
At the heart of Long Beach, California, the International Association for Food Protection (IAFP) 2024 Annual Conference took place from July 14 to July 17. Drawing over 3,400 participants globally from regulatory bodies, academia, industry, and professional advocacy sectors, the event focused on advancing cutting-edge science, technology, and policy updates regarding food safety and sanitation. Attendees engaged in presentations, exhibitions, and roundtables, fostering collaboration across industries.
Remco and Vikan were active participants in several Professional Development Groups (PDGs), such as Food Hygiene and Sanitation, Sanitary Equipment and Facility Design, Retail and Food Service, and Food Chemical Hazards and Food Allergy. These engagements allowed us to stay informed about recent trends and developments in these fields. A particularly noteworthy discussion at a PDG highlighted the importance of implementing a robust tool management program, emphasizing the need for effective cooperation between food sites and third-party contract cleaners alongside their internal sanitation teams.
The opening session featured the Ivan Parkin Lecture, delivered by Dr. Lawrence D. Goodridge, director of the Canadian Research Institute for Food Safety at the University of Guelph in Ontario. Dr. Goodridge urged food safety professionals, educators, and communicators to combat misinformation and disinformation, advocating for a better-informed society on food safety and science.
Deb Smith, Vikan's global hygiene specialist, led a successful pre-workshop on dry sanitation strategies, which was also conducted at last year's conference. Participants had hands-on experience with various dry sanitation tools and methods, including dry vapor steam, vacuums, dry ice blasting, manual cleaning, and chemical sanitizers. Additionally, Deb presented at the symposium "Dry Cleaning and Sanitation in Dry Low-Moisture Environments," sharing her industry insights on dry sanitation solutions.
Amit M. Kheradia, Remco's Environmental Health and Sanitation Manager, delivered a technical presentation analyzing 18 years of FDA inspectional observation data concerning equipment and environmental sanitation issues. His presentation included key takeaways and recommendations based on the study.

Key sessions covered topics such as dry sanitation in low-moisture environments, allergen control programs, Cronobacter control in powdered infant formula processing, recontamination risks in food manufacturing, sanitation in food retail, Listeria monocytogenes control in dairy products, and communicating complex food safety data.
From a regulatory standpoint, the USDA's FSIS continues efforts to reduce Salmonella in raw poultry products, introducing new policies aimed at improving contamination controls throughout the supply chain. Meanwhile, the FDA's Human Foods Program (HFP) began operations officially, streamlining oversight of human food safety.
The conference concluded with an awards banquet, where Neil Bogart received the prestigious Sanitarian of the Year award, and Walmart was honored with the Black Pearl Award for outstanding corporate excellence in food safety and quality.
Looking ahead, the 2025 IAFP conference will be hosted in Ohio, offering another platform for innovation and learning in food safety.
