The price of mahogany furniture generally fell by more than 10%

In 2015, news of mahogany furniture manufacturers shutting down started to flood in. In fact, the entire mahogany industry had been in a state of instability for over a year. Reports of red sandalwood fraud worth tens of thousands of yuan, the most intense crackdown on the rosewood industry in history, and sudden price drops in mahogany furniture kept spreading. Particularly, Burmese rosewood—once highly valued—had plummeted from 30,000 yuan per ton to just 10,000 yuan per ton in a single year. According to reports from the Guangzhou market, the overall price of mahogany furniture had dropped by more than 10%. Raw material prices have also seen a significant decline, falling between 20% to 30%. It is reported that from the beginning of last year, while the price of rosewood furniture did drop, the raw material prices changed relatively little, yet still fell by around 20-30%. The price reduction of Burmese rosewood was especially dramatic, with a decrease of about 50%. At its peak, it reached 30,000 yuan per ton, but now, good quality wood can be purchased for as low as 10,000 yuan per ton. While the changes in raw material prices are directly reflected in the cost of materials, the pricing of finished furniture is influenced by multiple factors. It’s not only affected by the cost of raw materials, but also by the craftsmanship and product positioning, as well as broader economic conditions. Industry experts believe that the current drop in mahogany furniture prices is largely due to the unfavorable macroeconomic environment. “Consumers are hesitant to buy, even though raw material prices have fallen,” one expert said. With falling raw material prices, consumers fear that purchasing now might not be beneficial, leading them into a wait-and-see mode. This hesitation has forced some manufacturers to cut prices, triggering a chain reaction across the entire industry. However, some insiders suggest that in recent years, many mahogany furniture companies have expanded rapidly, with some entering the market too quickly. When demand dropped significantly, their financial chains broke, resulting in frequent reports of closures. It is also noted that the current price drops mainly affect mid-to-low-end products, while high-end collectible pieces remain strong and maintain high prices. Adulteration remains a major issue in the industry. According to insiders, the expansion of mahogany furniture in major home stores has increased in recent years. For brands that focus on integrity and long-term management, the real problem is not sales, but the increasing scarcity of raw materials and widespread adulteration. For example, the national standard allows for a small amount of "white edge" wood in mahogany furniture production, provided it doesn’t affect the overall structure or appearance. However, some businesses use only non-white edges or mix cheaper woods into the furniture, making it difficult for the average consumer to tell the difference. In some cases, nails or glue are used instead of traditional wooden joints, which violates industry standards. Another common practice is mislabeling during sales. For instance, Burmese rosewood or Laos pear may be falsely labeled as Vietnamese huanghuali, or red, green, and black sandalwood may be misrepresented as national standard mahogany. To address this chaos, the Redwood and Redwood Products Testing Center under the Chinese Redwood Committee was recently established. However, it is still challenging to meet market demands, as only a few institutions, such as the Chinese Academy of Forestry and Nanjing Forestry University, offer reliable testing services.
