Moon Cake Packaging Changes - Different Choices of Different Times

From the 2015 Mid-Autumn Festival, which lasted for ten days, mooncakes took center stage in major retail stores. This year's mooncakes have embraced a simple and folk-style design, moving away from the previous complex and extravagant packaging. Since the founding of the People’s Republic of China, mooncake packaging has evolved from its humble beginnings—starting with basic materials like butter paper and yellowed grass—to more traditional styles, and now returning to a simpler, eco-friendly approach. In the 1950s and 1960s, during the Mid-Autumn Festival, eating a small mooncake was considered a luxury. At that time, mooncakes were scarce, and a single cake would be divided among four people. The overall food and clothing situation was still challenging, so even when people could afford a mooncake, they focused on the taste rather than the packaging. Back then, some mooncakes were wrapped in yellowed grass or white paper, with a layer of butter paper and a red square paper, tied with a paper rope—this was the most elegant packaging available at the time. After the reform and opening up, food packaging, including mooncakes, saw an upgrade. Plastic bags replaced the earlier paper wraps, and each package cost just five cents. Despite the low price, people were very thrifty, often buying only what they needed. By the 1990s, the function of eating mooncakes gradually faded, and the gift-giving aspect became more prominent. As a result, packaging became increasingly luxurious, diverse, and artistic. Mooncakes came in various shapes—round, oval, polygonal—and were packed in paper boxes, tin boxes, or plastic containers. Designs incorporated elements like flowers, myths, and landscapes, reflecting the beauty of the full moon. Moreover, mooncake packaging began to emphasize versatility, aesthetics, and occasionality. After the mooncakes were consumed, the packaging itself often had practical uses. In recent years, with growing environmental awareness and government anti-corruption campaigns, the trend of extravagant mooncake packaging has declined. The focus has shifted toward green, simple, and natural designs. Paper packaging is now dominant, and bamboo, rattan, and wooden gift boxes are gaining popularity, adding a unique touch to the festival. These eco-friendly options not only showcase the creativity of designers but also provide consumers with a fresh experience while minimizing environmental impact. The evolution of mooncake packaging mirrors the journey of life—simple, complex, and then back to nature. While there may have been losses along the way, such as the excesses of luxury, the return to simplicity often brings the best memories. Just like how coarse linen feels more relaxed and natural than a fancy outfit, the future of food packaging might lie in simplicity, elegance, and meaningful design.
