Where should you install your Floating Mantel? Over the fireplace, of course!
Traditionally, the mantel would be placed about 6 inches above the fireplace, centered evenly. But feel free to install it wherever you like—just make sure it doesn’t pose a fire hazard. Ignore anyone who tells you differently. # What Do I Need to Install a Floating Mantel?

To begin, you’ll definitely need a stud finder if your fireplace is surrounded by cement board or a similar material. In this case, make sure you have some drywall anchors on hand. If you're dealing with a full masonry fireplace, ensure you have the right masonry tools (bits and screws). You’ll also need a drill with the appropriate bits (for Glenn, you’ll need both a ¼” and 3/16” drill bit). If you want everything to sit flush with the wall, you’ll also need a ¾” countersink bit. We highly recommend using a level to ensure everything is straight. You don’t want a crooked shelf that makes items fall off! A tape measure and pencil will also come in handy for this project. # How to Install a Floating Mantel:

While following these steps, remember that it’s always possible to open up your wall and add blocking (a horizontal stud drilled into two vertical studs) if you’re having trouble finding enough studs for installation. ## Step 1: Attach Your Bracket on One Side & Level Use your drill bit to create a pre-drilled hole on the first side. You can sketch out a rough outline beforehand to help guide you and keep things centered. Once the bracket is attached on one side, lift up the other side and use your level to get the bracket perfectly leveled. Mark where you’ll need to pre-drill on the second side, then remove the bracket temporarily. ## Step 2: Add Additional Anchor Points With Drywall Anchors If you're drilling into masonry, you can skip this step and simply add as many anchor points into your stone or brick as possible. The more you use, the sturdier your shelf will be. For those installing the mantel on cement board or a similar material, add drywall anchors wherever you can't hit a stud. Keep your bracket level, mark where you'll need the anchors, then remove the bracket and add them where needed. ## Step 3: Install and Enjoy! All the prep work is done! Now, attach the bracket securely to the wall and drill it in place. Finally, slide on your beautifully crafted shelf slab and step back to admire your handiwork. Great job! # Selecting the Perfect Shelf for Your Mantel
