Retro small things to create a vintage home to turn the home into an aesthetic laboratory

Xiaonuo, 33, is a photographer who lives with her husband in a 89-square-meter apartment that reflects their shared passion for creativity and retro aesthetics. Both of them work in the creative industry—she as a photographer, he as a wedding planner. Their home isn't just a living space; it's a reflection of their artistic vision and love for industrial retro style. They transformed their small three-bedroom apartment into a functional open space by combining two rooms into one big area that serves as a bedroom, studio, and cloakroom. It’s a cozy yet stylish loft-like environment where they can work and live comfortably. The couple didn’t spend much on soft furnishings—only around 60,000 yuan—but focused on smart design choices to create a unique atmosphere. One of the standout features is the back wall of the sofa, which Xiaonuo decorated herself using simple color block stitching. It adds a modern touch to the white wall, while also acting as a divider between the bedroom and the studio. They bought large IKEA carpets to add warmth and texture to the space. The room is filled with personal touches, from handmade items to vintage finds. They also have a Schnauzer, and to keep things clean, they set up a “dog toilet” on the balcony—a small corner with a pool for easy cleaning, paired with a flower stand. The dog waste is even used as fertilizer, making it both practical and eco-friendly. The concept of “industrial retro” is central to their home. Many of the furniture pieces are made of wrought iron, giving the space a rugged yet elegant feel. The side table, coffee table, and bookshelf are all painted iron, and they use magnets to pin photos or notes—making it both fun and functional. Among the treasures in their home are two wooden chairs made by Xiaonuo’s grandfather 50 years ago. She found them during a visit and brought them back to place in front of their Japanese-style dining table, paired with modern white iron chairs for contrast. Another unique piece is a coffee table made from an old sewing machine that had been unused for 20 years. It was repurposed into a stylish surface that now holds decor and plants. Even the green sofa in the living room was once discarded. Xiaonuo found it near a garbage bin, cleaned it up, and gave it a fresh new look. The result is a natural, retro vibe that feels authentic and lived-in. For Xiaonuo and her husband, recycling and reusing aren’t just trends—they’re part of their lifestyle. They believe that “garbage” can be reborn with a little creativity and effort. Their home is more than just a place to live; it’s a personal expression of their values, style, and love for the past.
