Retro small things to create a vintage home to turn the home into an aesthetic laboratory

Xiaonuo, 33, is a photographer who lives with her husband in an 89-square-meter apartment that reflects their passion for creativity and vintage aesthetics. Both of them work in the creative industry—she as a photographer, and he as a wedding planner. Their home is not just a living space but a personal studio where they experiment with design, blending old and new elements to create a unique industrial retro vibe. They transformed their small three-bedroom apartment into a spacious open area by merging two rooms, creating a combined living room, workspace, and cloakroom. The goal was to turn their home into a loft-like studio, and they succeeded with minimal budget. While the hard furnishings and appliances cost around 120,000 RMB, the soft decor—like cushions, rugs, and art—only cost about 60,000 RMB. Xiaonuo painted the wall behind the sofa herself using simple color blocks, which adds a modern yet artistic touch to the white background. This same wall also serves as a divider between the bedroom and the studio. She bought large IKEA carpets to add texture and warmth to the space. Their dog, a Schnauzer, has a specially designed "dog toilet" on the balcony. It's basically a corner with a small pool for easy cleaning, and next to it, there’s a small plant stand. The dog waste is even used as fertilizer, making the space both functional and eco-friendly. The couple loves the industrial retro style, which means they don’t just go for second-hand items but instead focus on combining old and new materials. Many of the furniture pieces in their home are made of iron, including the side table, coffee table, and bookshelf. They often use magnets to attach photos or notes, adding a playful and practical element to the decor. One of their most cherished pieces is a pair of wooden chairs made by Xiaonuo’s grandfather over 50 years ago. They placed them in front of a Japanese-style dining table, paired with modern white wrought-iron chairs for contrast. Another treasure is an old sewing machine from 20 years ago, which they repurposed into a sleek coffee table. The clutter and flower pots on top give it a stylish, lived-in look. Even the green sofa in the living room was found on the street—literally picked up from a garbage bin. After cleaning and restoring it, it brought a natural, retro charm that perfectly fits the overall aesthetic of their home. For Xiaonuo, collecting “garbage” isn’t just a hobby—it’s a way to give new life to forgotten objects and express their creative vision.
