3D printing new realm: light painting for animation
Not all 3D printed objects are tangible. For Aaron Bothman, a student at the California College of the Arts, he wanted to incorporate a 3D-printed light and shadow effect into his thesis project, *The Red Witch*. His inspiration came from an artist named Ekaggrat Singh Kalsi in Beijing, who used a modified 3D printer to create "light paintings." This innovative technique caught media attention, sparking Bothman’s interest in exploring similar creative possibilities.
This kind of "light painting" isn’t something you can see with your eyes directly—it only appears in photographs or videos. That was exactly what Bothman aimed for. He and his father built a small Delta-style 3D printer from a kit, making some modifications along the way. They replaced the original hot end with an LED light, allowing the printer to leave glowing trails as it moved. To capture these trails, Bothman set up a camera with long exposure settings, tracking the LED’s movement and creating a mesmerizing "light animation" that was recorded on film.
This wasn’t their first 3D printing collaboration. In an interview, Aaron shared how his father, a mechanical engineering professor at UCSB, had taught him 3D printing since high school. “I’m currently a cartoonist and artist in Los Angeles,†he said. “I graduated from the California College of the Arts’ animation program a few months ago and now work at a small studio called JibJab. Learning 3D printing from my dad helped me develop more ambitious projects, especially in stop motion animation.â€
To create his light animations, Each frame from Maya software was sent to the 3D printer one at a time. Over time, these individual frames formed a continuous motion illusion—similar to traditional stop motion but using light instead of physical models. The final result was a dynamic visual piece, built layer by layer without any physical materials. It was a unique blend of digital design and physical expression, pushing the boundaries of what 3D printing could achieve.
