Redwood furniture is so expensive, where is it?

Redwood furniture is often considered expensive, and many people wonder where the value truly lies. Friends often discuss this topic, but opinions vary. Some say it's about craftsmanship, others believe it's about culture... Today, I want to talk about mahogany wood and where its quality really shines. Evaluating the quality of a material requires a comprehensive approach. Here are nine key factors you can use as criteria: First: Density. The term "air dry density" refers to the weight-to-volume ratio of wood when it reaches equilibrium moisture content under certain atmospheric conditions. A higher air dry density means the wood is heavier, harder, and stronger, making it an important indicator of strength. Generally, the higher the density, the better the material.
Second: Oil and Fat. Oil content has always been a key factor in judging the quality of wood. The more oil a wood contains, the smoother and more lubricious it feels when touched. Oil helps make furniture smooth, wear-resistant, and less likely to crack, while also maintaining its luster over time.
Third: Color. In Chinese culture, there’s a saying “Yao Huang Wei Zi,” which highlights the popularity of yellow and purple hues among the Chinese people. Among these, yellow is considered the most prestigious, symbolizing honor and royalty. Purple represents wealth and status, while red signifies prosperity and good fortune. Fourth: Smell. The scent of wood plays a significant role in the overall quality of a home. For classical furniture, the choice of wood fragrance is very strict. Hainan Huanghuali, when freshly cut, has a rich aroma that becomes slightly fragrant over time. Its scent is known as "scented," with a slight spicy note. This fragrance is one of the three famous traditional Chinese scents, loved by literati from Jiangnan. That’s why Hainan Huanghuali was so highly regarded during the Ming Dynasty. Vietnamese Huanghuali, on the other hand, has a sour scent, which is less desirable. Lobular rosewood has a lighter scent with hints of pine and fragrance. Red rosewood emits a sour aroma when cut open, and some high-quality varieties have a medicinal scent. Meanwhile, woods like Wenge and Ebony have less noticeable smells. Fifth: Texture. The texture of wood directly affects the appearance and charm of classical furniture. Hainan Huanghuali has a unique texture described as "sometimes hidden, sometimes visible," with vivid and ever-changing patterns. It features animal-like "ghost faces," such as peacocks or lions, as well as landscapes, water ripples, and phoenix eyes—each revealing nature's magic. The texture of Vietnamese Huanghuali is less refined, with more common patterns and a more colorful appearance. If we compare it to a young woman with deep charm, Vietnamese Huanghuali might be likened to a little girl with flowers. The texture of lobular rosewood is more stable, with fine grain and curling patterns known as "cow hair." On black and lacquered materials, the texture may be almost invisible. Red rosewood also has diverse textures, including ghost faces, bull's hair, and stripes, making it no less impressive than Huanghuali.
Sixth: Flexibility. The flexibility of wood greatly influences the quality of furniture. Better flexibility makes the wood more suitable for carving, and it also affects the stability and maintenance of the furniture.
Lobular rosewood is considered the most flexible wood. Its fibers are extremely fine, ideal for various types of carving. Whether it's horizontal or vertical engravings, they flow smoothly. Especially for delicate carvings, red sandalwood is the best choice, which is why it was favored by the Qing imperial family. Compared to red sandalwood, Hainan Huanghuali is more stable. Due to its strong internal stress, it is rarely deformed, making it unsuitable for overly complex carvings. As a result, we see that leftover Hainan Huanghuali pieces are rarely modified, and the Ming-style furniture, which used a lot of Huanghuali, developed a simple aesthetic different from the ornate Qing style. Seventh: Stability. One of the main concerns for furniture buyers is the stability of the wood. A piece may look solid at first, but after a few years, it may start to deform. This is due to poor wood stability. From a stability perspective, Hainan Huanghuali is undoubtedly one of the best. Because it takes a long time to mature, its heartwood is highly stable. We've seen Ming-style furniture survive for over 400 years without deformation, which speaks volumes about the quality of Huanghuali.
The stability of lobular rosewood is similar to that of Hainan Huanghuali. Although rosewood has been used for furniture for a shorter time than Huanghuali, Qing dynasty rosewood furniture has stood the test of time for over 300 years, showing remarkable stability. Red rosewood varies in stability depending on the type, but high-quality red rosewood is just as stable as Huanghuali and lobular rosewood. Eighth: Softness. The softness of wood refers to the tactile experience when touching it. Hainan Huanghuali and lobular rosewood are often considered the finest woods, known for their smooth and delicate feel.
Ninth: Cultural Heritage. Among all the mahogany materials, Hainan Huanghuali is the oldest and the pillar of Ming-style furniture. During the late Ming period, red sandalwood began to be widely used, becoming the hallmark of Qing-style furniture. Siamese rosewood became popular during the mid to late Qing Dynasty, used as a substitute for endangered red sandalwood and Huanghuali. The characteristics of Huanghuali and lobular rosewood influenced the styles of Ming and Qing furniture. When red rosewood emerged, classical furniture became even more popular. From a historical and cultural perspective, Huanghuali and red sandalwood share a similar legacy, while Siamese rosewood also carries rich cultural significance, though it remains less influential in terms of cultural impact.
