Types of tea and their respective functions

Tea is one of the world's three major beverages, and China, as a country with a long history of tea culture, boasts a wide variety of tea types. Tea primarily refers to the leaves and buds of the Camellia sinensis plant. Traditionally, fresh leaves are used for making tea, but over time, the range has expanded to include flower teas, seed teas, and more. Depending on the variety, processing methods, or brewing techniques, tea can be classified into different categories. In China, there are six major tea systems based on their processing techniques. First, black tea. Black tea is mainly made from the tender buds and leaves of the tea plant using traditional fermentation methods. The resulting infusion is typically reddish in color, which gives it its name. A well-known example is Dianhong from Yunnan. Black tea aids digestion, helps refresh the body, and may have anti-aging properties, though it is not recommended for people who tend to get easily agitated. Second, green tea. As the second most consumed type of tea globally, green tea is produced without fermentation, preserving the natural green color of the leaves. It is often made from new shoots or young leaves. Green tea helps reduce blood fat, supports weight management, and is beneficial for overall health. However, individuals suffering from neurasthenia are advised to avoid excessive consumption. Third, yellow tea. Yellow tea is characterized by its yellow leaves and golden-colored brew. This unique color comes from an incomplete drying process during production. One famous variety is Junshan Silver Needle. Yellow tea is known for aiding digestion and promoting healthy metabolism, particularly benefiting the stomach and spleen. Fourth, dark tea. Unlike black tea, dark tea gets its name from its deep, dark appearance. It is typically made from older leaves and undergoes a post-fermentation process. Pu'er tea from Yunnan is a renowned example. Dark tea is valued for its ability to aid digestion and improve gut health over time. Fifth, white tea. White tea is a lightly fermented tea that goes through a withering process. Its delicate, silvery appearance resembles snow, hence its name. White tea is known for improving eyesight, regulating blood sugar levels, and supporting liver health. It is often considered one of the purest forms of tea. Sixth, oolong tea. Oolong, also known as blue tea, is a semi-fermented tea that falls between green and black tea in terms of oxidation. A famous example is Anxi Tieguanyin. Oolong tea is praised for its ability to lower cholesterol, promote anti-aging effects, and support weight loss, especially among women. However, it’s best to avoid drinking it on an empty stomach or before bedtime due to its tannin content. With so many varieties available, each type of tea offers unique benefits. Choosing the right tea depends on personal preferences, health conditions, and lifestyle. Understanding the characteristics of different teas can help you make more informed choices when enjoying this ancient and beloved beverage.
