Frank Nguyen, now 17, has been deeply concerned about his mother’s health since he was in sixth grade. Over the years, he watched helplessly as his mother, Lan Nguyen, gradually lost her vision in one eye and experienced declining sight in the other. She also started facing hearing problems, and now her health is deteriorating further. She suffers from heart issues like dizziness, thyroid problems, and irregular heart rates, making her condition increasingly unstable. “My mom got really sick,” Nguyen said. “I was scared she might have an emergency, but I didn’t know how to handle it.” However, during a summer program at Ryerson University, Nguyen found a breakthrough that would change everything. He eventually designed and 3D printed a prototype of a heart rate alarm monitoring device. His goal was not only to help his mother but also to assist Others with similar health conditions around the world. The current version of the device is somewhat bulky, but it's packed with functionality. It can be worn on the wrist and uses a light and sensor to track the user’s heart rate. If a heart attack is detected, it sends an immediate text message to caregivers or emergency responders. Nguyen’s prototype is 3D printed and includes two microcontrollers, an 8GB storage unit, and a short message service system. It relies on cellular networks and GPS, all powered by two lithium-ion batteries. When the user wears the device, a small green light flashes directly beneath it. This light reflects back to a sensor on the wristband, and a special algorithm calculates the heart rate based on voltage changes detected by the sensor. The monitor stores heartbeat data over time, and users can access this information via a built-in memory card. Additionally, the device can automatically call 911 through a virtual network. When it detects abnormal heart rate readings, it sends real-time alerts to emergency services, including the patient’s age, medical history, and location. This innovative solution shows how 3D printing is not just a technological advancement, but a lifeline for those in need.
