Among them is Frank Nguyen, a 17-year-old who has been deeply affected by his mother’s declining health. Since sixth grade, he has watched his mother, Lan Nguyen, gradually lose her vision in one eye and experience worsening sight in the other, along with developing hearing issues. Her condition has continued to deteriorate, and she now suffers from heart-related problems like dizziness, thyroid issues, and irregular heart rates. Faced with these challenges, Nguyen felt helpless and worried about what might come next. However, during a summer program at Ryerson University, he found a spark of inspiration that led him to create a prototype for a heart rate monitoring device. His goal was not only to help his mother but also to assist Others facing similar health concerns around the world. The current version of the device is somewhat bulky, but it's functional and innovative. It can be worn on the wrist and uses a light and sensor to track the user's heart rate. If an abnormal reading is detected, such as a potential heart attack, the device automatically sends a text message to caregivers or emergency services. The prototype includes two microcontrollers, an 8GB storage unit, and a short message transmission system. It operates using cellular networks and GPS, all powered by two small lithium-ion batteries. When worn, the device features a small green light that flashes beneath it. This light reflects off a sensor on the wristband, allowing a special algorithm to calculate the user’s heart rate based on voltage changes. The monitor stores heartbeat data over time, and users can retrieve this information via a built-in memory card. Nguyen also designed the device to connect to emergency services through a virtual network. When the system detects an unusual heart rate, it sends a real-time message containing critical details—such as the patient’s age, medical history, and location—to emergency responders. This innovation could save lives by ensuring quick action in emergencies. Nguyen’s journey shows how young minds, driven by love and determination, can make a meaningful impact through technology. His work not only highlights the potential of 3D printing in healthcare but also demonstrates the power of personal motivation to drive innovation.
