Salvia plants of the Labiatae family are a very important class of medicinal and ornamental resources. Its chemical composition, especially the terpene chemical composition and its medicinal properties have always been hot topics in the fields of natural product chemistry and new drug development.

Recently, the research group Xu Gang of the State Key Laboratory of Phytochemistry and Sustainable Utilization of Plant Resources in the West of Kunming Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences discovered a novel terpenoid during the study of S. przewalskii The dimer przewalskone. From the perspective of biogenic source and its structural characteristics, przewalskone should be obtained by polymerizing two different terpenoid units through the intermolecular hetero-Diels-Alder reaction. The two structural units are danshenol-type C23 terpenoids and icetexane-type diterpenoids, and related literature investigations show that these two types of components only coexist in sage plants. In biological activity studies, the compound showed very significant in vitro growth inhibitory activity against the five tumor cell lines tested (IC50 0.69-2.35 μM).

At present, the compound and its biological activity have applied for patent protection. The research group will further develop a series of research work around the structure of the compound and related biological activities.

Since Dr. Xu Gang began to pursue a graduate degree in 2001, he began to conduct systematic research on the chemical and active ingredients of this important plant group under the guidance of mentor Zhao Qinshi and Academician Sun Handong. After more than 10 years of accumulation, systematic research work has been carried out on more than 10 terpene chemical constituents of this genus, and more than 200 compounds of various types have been isolated, including more than 50 new compounds and 6 new skeleton compounds. In the study of biological activity, it was found that some terpenoids have very significant biological activity. It has received funding from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Important Direction Project of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Knowledge Innovation Project, the Shanghai Chenshan Botanical Garden Cooperation Project of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the National Key Laboratory of Phytochemistry and the Sustainable Utilization of Plant Resources in the West 13 papers, 5 of which were published in Org. Lett., J. Chromat. A, J. Nat. Prod. And J. Agric. Food. Chem. Nat. Prod. Rep. Was selected as the annual research hotspot.
