Scientists reveal mechanisms related to bat flight and immune adaptability

Research on bat genomics completed by Chinese and foreign scientists has recently been published online in Science. Scientists have compared the bat genomes of two different groups, revealed the mechanisms related to the adaptability of bat flight and the immune system, clarified the molecular diversity mechanisms of different bat groups, and studied the biology and evolution of bat and other mammals Provides new ideas.

The bat has a strong flying ability, and it is also a natural host for a variety of zoonotic viruses. It can carry dozens of viruses. It is also the only mammal that has evolved a real flying ability. Closely related to physiological changes. Through in-depth analysis, the researchers found that a series of genes related to DNA damage checkpoints or DNA repair pathways were strongly positively selected in bats. They also found that genes related to skin elasticity and genes involved in muscle contraction have evolved rapidly in bats and may also help flight.

Bats can carry a variety of zoonotic viruses and are almost immune to infection. Through the study of related genes, scientists found that the NF-κB family transcription factor c-REL in bats was positively selected. This gene not only functions in innate immunity, but also has a certain relationship with DNA damage response. Natural killer (NK) cells are the first line of defense against external pathogenic microorganisms and tumors.

The researchers said that the development of genomics has provided important basic data for humans to understand the genetic basis of species origin, differentiation and diversity. Bats have a special position in evolution. During the long-term evolution, they have developed many very interesting biological phenomena, such as flight, echolocation, and hibernation. Genomics is only one of the entrances for these studies, and the data and results of the study are of great significance to related research. At the same time, bats are viral vectors that are extremely harmful to humans. Comparative analysis at the genomics level will also provide important tools for understanding bats' own immune systems and virus defense mechanisms.

The results were jointly completed by scientists from BGI, Australian Institute of Zoology, Wuhan Institute of Virology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, US Naval Medical Center, and Henry Jackson Foundation.

No matter what the office, or what kind of work you do, a good pair of scissors is pretty much a requirement.  You will always find myself snipping something, be it for work, craft or a whirlwind wrapping day.  It`s only then that you will realize that not just any pair will do; you need the right scissors for the task at hand. Our Office Scissors are a great choice for you.
