3D printing car Bukitti: just a few hours from building a car to the road

Can 3D printing cars be opened? In the 23rd annual Billy Car Competition held this year, there was a car made by 3D printing that caught everyone's attention. It is reported that the car takes only a few hours from concept design to finished product landing.

The 3D printer called "Bukitti" was designed and built by Steven Rosewell. Through the photos, we can see that the 3D printing car adopts many curved structures. It has a three-wheel structure and the cockpit can only accommodate one person. Steven Rosewell has a very rich 3D printing experience. He bought a 3D printer 15 years ago and printed various sculptures and movie props for his studio. Therefore, he is also very experienced in manufacturing cars through 3D printers (even if the car is simplified, at least it can run people). He introduced that he first designed the 3D model of Bukitti using 3D modeling software, and then successfully printed the car with the help of multi-axis robot arm and extruder (melting and shaping plastic).

He also mentioned a term called FDM-Fuse Deposit Modelling. FDM materials are generally thermoplastic materials such as waxes, ABS, nylon, etc., which are fed in the form of filaments. The material is heated and melted in the spray head. The nozzle moves along the cross-sectional profile and fill path of the part while extruding the molten material, the material solidifies rapidly and condenses with the surrounding material. It is important to note that since the 3D printing process is irreversible, it is generally one-step molding.

However, he also pointed out that the only drawback of Bukitti is that it is not fast enough. He hopes to make a better streamlined model in the future and make the front of the car a pointed shape. Steven Rosewell said the 3D printer can melt and redo things.

Edit Comment: The 3D printed car doesn't sound too good, but someone does madly drive it on the road. A car is a large and complex system of precision systems. Although not all parts rely on 3D printing, it is not excluded that specific parts are manufactured by 3D printing. After all, 3D printing is more flexible and cheaper than traditional molds and high-cost production lines. The most important thing is that it is faster!
