3D printed art design to create hearing aid chandelier

Recently, Bruno Vereecke, a designer from Antwerp, Belgium, developed a very special lamp Absorblight. This lamp is not for lighting purposes, it is actually designed for people who are partially hearing loss or hearing impaired. It can be said that it is actually a 3D printed hearing aid.

Vereecke is a construction engineer working at Vector Architecten. He designed this project for his own personal reasons: "My wife and younger son are all in the back, which brings a lot of inconvenience to our daily lives. To this end, I want to design one. Machines so they can hear more clearly," he said.

After careful consideration, Vereecke finally chose an unusual solution: a lamp that can help hearing. “I finally chose to design a special lamp, Absorblight, which can be hung on the table. Why choose a lamp? In fact, light is important for people with poor hearing, which allows them to see it correctly. The facial features of the conversation object and the position of the mouth," he explained. “You can hang it in the most important place in your family life – on the dining table.” In addition, he took this design to participate in an additive manufacturing challenge organized by Plan C.

But this 3D printed light can do more than just provide light – after all, it doesn't require 3D printing – it has other features. The side of the top of the Absorblight has a complex design that reduces ambient noise and other sounds from all directions. “Absorblight's top side absorbs ambient noise, which makes it difficult to tell the true meaning of sound,” he explained. At present, such lamps have been extensively tested in noisy places, where people with hearing impairments reported an increase of 15% in their understandable sound content.

Therefore, it is no wonder that the Absorblight lamp excelled in the additive manufacturing design challenge, which stood out from more than 60 entries and became one of the four winners.

However, it is conceivable that Absorblight is not easy to design. Vereecke took a considerable amount of effort to design this static object that absorbs sound. More importantly, this kind of lamp can be customized to absorb a specific sound. So Absorblight can theoretically be tailored to anyone who is suffering from hearing impairment. This is a simple, effective, low-cost solution that does not require any devices to be placed in your ear. The Belgian designer is currently considering further improvements. "This game is just an exercise or a prelude. I still have a lot to do," he said. Vereecke is currently looking for funding and practical manufacturing solutions to put this interesting hearing aid into production and help people with hearing impairments around the world.
